THE PROJECT

Years of dedicated advocacy from Seacliff and Kingston Park residents laid the groundwork for Kingston Park Kiosk—a long-desired, community-focused venue right on the beachfront. Holdfast Bay City Council committed $1.4 million to bring the kiosk to life, designed to serve the community while withstanding the challenges of a coastal environment.

PERMALITE® WAVELINE® cladding, crafted from corrosion-resistant marine-grade aluminium, was chosen to protect and visually enhance the structure amid the harsh coastal elements.

Completed in February 2024, the new structure—officially known as the “Nest Kiosk”—includes seating for 40 patrons indoors, an outdoor shaded area for 42 guests, and a takeaway counter. Located on the scenic Coast Park Walk within Brighton Beachfront Holiday Park, the kiosk invites residents and visitors alike to enjoy coffee, local bites, and expansive ocean views.

THE SOLUTION:

Troppo Architects, a national architecture and design firm, took on the challenge of designing a space that would harmonise with its coastal surroundings. Prioritising materials and layouts that emphasised a natural connection to the beach, they created “a place that can open up to enjoy the sunshine and sea breeze but also feel protected and warm.” This design approach enabled an airy, open space that offers comfort without detracting from the coastal experience.

PERMALITE® cladding proved to be the ideal solution, balancing resilience with the beachside aesthetic that Troppo Architects envisioned. Known for its corrosion-resistant aluminium construction, PERMALITE® WAVELINE® was chosen for both the roofing and guttering, which would face constant exposure to salt air.

“We needed a sheet metal roofing that could withstand the corrosive coastal location and achieve a warranty the client could rely on,” Tain Patterson, Senior Architect at Troppo Architects shared. “PERMALITE® was recommended to us as the only sheet metal roofing product that would achieve a 25-year warranty.”

The assurance of a 25-year warranty gave both the architects and the council peace of mind, allowing the project to proceed confidently with a lightweight, durable roofing solution. Tony Wood, Lysaght Business Development & Marketing Manager, reinforced this point, stating, “the comprehensive warranty, extensive product range, and diverse colour options offered by PERMALITE® provided significant advantages for the project.”

Additionally, PERMALITE®’s lightweight composition allowed Troppo Architects to create a sheet metal roof without incurring the risks of costly future repairs. “With PERMALITE®, we avoided the high level of risk associated with other materials, which could have led to costly replacements within a few years” Tain Patterson notes. As an added benefit, PERMALITE®’s recyclable aluminium aligns with the council’s commitment to sustainable building practices.

OUTCOMES:

Kingston Park Kiosk now stands as a vibrant community hub, providing locals and visitors with a beautiful and durable space to enjoy the beachside atmosphere.

Mayor Amanda Wilson reflected on the impact, saying, “the views from this location are magnificent, and this new building is going to be a great asset to the area and to Holdfast Bay as a whole.” With PERMALITE® WAVELINE® cladding, the kiosk maintains its fresh, beachside look while standing up to the coastal conditions year-round, enhancing the landscape for both residents and visitors.
