Hay Point Coal Export Terminal 3 (HPX3)

Hay Point coal

Project Details:

The HPX3 project is the expansion of the existing Hay Point Coal Export Terminal in the Mackay region for the client BMA. The project included over 80 on land conveyor galleries of a variety of sizes, 6 on land transfer towers, 2 on land surge bins and sample plants, and over 220 offshore conveyors extending the coal loading facility some 2.5km out to sea, connecting to the new ship berth, 2 offshore transfer towers and a ship loader. The design and specification of the project was completed by Aurecon Hatch. Bechtel was appointed as EPC to deliver the “pre-assembly” of the project and a joint venture between MacDow, Geo Sea and Bechtel was formed to deliver the onsite installation and commissioning. The pre assembly of the project was conduct by Peng Lai Jutal Offshore Engineering in China and the ship loader was constructed by Han Young Industries in South Korea. BlueScope Permalite worked closely with all parties involved in the project providing assistance with the initial design, quantity surveying, supply chain development, technical advice and on a number of occasions travelling to Hay Point, China and South Korea to provide onsite technical and installation training and support to the relevant sub contracted trades.

Products:

BlueScope Permalite® supplied a range of products including in excess of 150,000m2 LT7 roof and wall sheeting, the roof sheets were crimp curved to a 400mm radius reducing the amount of flashing and labour on site at the same time assisting the design in combating high wind pressures in the region. The off shore sheeting was distinctively pre-painted in the custom colour of Harbour Blue enabling it to blend with the natural environment of the Whitsundays.

Over 100,000lm of Permalite® aluminium purlins & girts were also used on the structure this assisted in the design brief for minimum weight and maximise component fit. These Permalite® products ensure ongoing maintenance free performance in the aggressive industrial/marine environment.

Outcome:

The assistance provided by BlueScope Permalite on the HPX3 project enabled the delivery of material to the pre-assembly yards to be on time, in-full and in good condition. This coupled with the offer of onsite assistance and localised supply chain set up ensured that the set schedule for the project was not impeded by material shortages or damages. BlueScope Permalite maintains a good working relationship with all of the relevant contractors involved in the HPX3 project.
